Comparison
Threadgehog vs Buffer AI Assistant: which is better for Threads posts?
Short answer
Buffer's AI Assistant helps you brainstorm and rewrite posts inside Buffer's composer, on every plan including Free. Threadgehog builds a brand voice from 10 to 20 example posts, writes a daily batch of Threads and X posts, learns from your approvals, and then sends them to Buffer. They work as a pair.

The short version
Buffer's AI Assistant is a helper inside a scheduler. You open the composer, ask for ideas or a rewrite, and edit the result. It is included in every Buffer plan, Free too, and its page says there are no limits on Free (checked October 2026).
Threadgehog is an app whose whole job is writing. It reads the posts that worked for you or anyone in your niche, writes drafts in that voice, and keeps learning from your decisions. Then it sends approved drafts to Buffer on your schedule.
Voice and learning
Buffer's AI page does not state that the assistant learns your brand voice. You tweak tone and structure in the composer for each post.
In Threadgehog you paste links to 10 to 20 posts that did well. It reads each post, or the whole thread, and builds six voice notes: sentence length, openers, closers, banned words, topics and tone. You can edit any note or paste new posts and rebuild the voice. See finding posts that work.
After that, each approve or reject feeds Learn now, which rewrites the rules for the next batch. With Buffer connected, most new drafts also build on what your top posts share, using Buffer's post numbers.
Where your text goes
Buffer's AI page says text is sent to OpenAI models. That is fine for many people, and worth knowing if you write about a client or a product that is not public yet.
In Threadgehog, you pick the writer: Threadgehog AI, your Claude or ChatGPT plan, or your own key from OpenRouter, Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, xAI or Moonshot. When it writes, what the request needs (your brand voice, brief, rules, example posts and the post itself) passes through Threadgehog's server to the provider, and the server stores none of it. Drafts, queue and media are stored on your Mac, and your key is kept in your Mac's Keychain.
Setting them up together
Connect Buffer in Threadgehog's Settings, Publishing, using the steps in the Buffer guide. Choose how often to send: once a day, twice a day, every 6 hours or every hour. Threadgehog picks the time of each post from your posts-a-day setting, spread from 9 AM to 9 PM.
Your Buffer channels stay as they are. Use Buffer's composer for the posts you write by hand, and let Threadgehog fill the rest. Buffer's AI Assistant remains available in the composer on every plan.
If you use Buffer's free plan, keep its caps in mind: 10 scheduled posts per channel and 1 threaded post. A daily batch will reach the post cap within days, so most people who add a daily writer move to a paid Buffer plan.
Reading Buffer's numbers
With Buffer connected, Threadgehog reads how your posts did. Insights compares your top posts with your typical post and shows the topics and formats that work. Most new drafts then build on what your top posts share. See the Buffer guide for the connection steps.
So the pair works in both directions: Threadgehog writes into Buffer, and Buffer's numbers feed back into the next batch.
How they connect
Buffer is one of the five schedulers Threadgehog supports. The Buffer integration guide covers setup. Threadgehog sets a time for each post from your posts-a-day setting, spread from 9 AM to 9 PM, and sends once a day, twice a day, every 6 hours or every hour while the app is open.
Buffer posts multi-post threads as threads. On Buffer's Free plan only 1 threaded post is allowed, while paid plans allow unlimited, so check your plan before queuing long threads. Posts with media need Cloudinary connected for Buffer.
Cost per channel
Buffer prices per channel: Essentials is $5 a month per channel ($60 a year, billed yearly) and Team is $10 a month per channel, billed yearly, with a 14-day trial on paid plans. Threads plus X is two channels.
Threadgehog prices by project and by AI drafts: Solo $29 a month (2 projects, 300 drafts, 30 images), Pro $49 (10 projects, 750 drafts, 75 images), Unlimited $79 (unlimited projects, 1,500 drafts, 150 images). List prices as of October 2026; yearly plans are $249, $399 and $649. You pay for both if you use both. The app is on a waitlist, and the 14-day trial starts when it opens. See pricing.
Where Buffer's AI Assistant is a good fit
Buffer's assistant costs nothing extra and sits where you already schedule. For a handful of posts a week that you write yourself, a rewrite or a quick idea inside the composer is enough.
Buffer also reaches more networks than most: Threads, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Bluesky and others, with a free plan covering 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel. If you need one tool for many platforms and only occasional AI help, Buffer alone fits.
