Steps

  1. 1

Create a project called Threads and X

Open Projects, create one, and paste your voice rules into the project instructions. Instructions apply to every chat in the project, so you write them once.

  2. 2

Add five to ten posts of yours as sources

Upload or paste posts that did well. Ask ChatGPT to list what they share: opener shape, length, how you close, words you never use. Save that list into the instructions.

  3. 3

Ask for a batch with the platform limits stated

Name the product, the angle and the count. Ask for a Threads version and an X version of each, and tell it to stay inside the character limit of each platform.

  4. 4

Edit three drafts by hand, then tell it what you changed

Paste your edited version back and say what you fixed. Ask it to add the rule to the project instructions so the next batch starts from it.

  5. 5

Copy approved posts into your scheduler

Paste each post into Threads, X or the scheduler you use, and pick the time there.

What ChatGPT is and who uses it for posts

ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant. You type a request and it writes text and files in return. People who promote a product on Threads and X use it as a drafting partner: they paste a changelog entry, a customer question or a rough idea, and ask for a post.

It is a general chat tool: the writing happens in the chat, and picking the day, posting and checking how it did happen in the tools you already use for Threads and X.

If you already pay for a ChatGPT plan, you have a capable writer at no extra cost. The rest of this guide covers what each plan costs, which ChatGPT features help with a posting routine, and how to prompt it so the drafts sound like you.

ChatGPT plans and pricing (as of October 2026)

OpenAI's pricing documentation lists these individual plans: Free at $0 a month, Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20 a month, and Pro starting at $100 a month. Pro comes in three levels, at $100, $200 or $500 a month. The Business plan is $20 per user per month when billed annually or $25 when billed monthly, with a two-user minimum.

Plus includes GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, and lets you extend usage with ChatGPT credits. Every plan has usage limits, and OpenAI's pricing page is the place to check the current allowance before you rely on a large daily batch.

For a founder writing a few posts a day, Plus is the plan most people reach for. The cheaper plans can still draft posts; the higher plans give you room for longer sessions and heavier tasks.

Threads and X support, scheduling and limits

ChatGPT writes the draft, and it reaches Threads or X when you paste it there or into a scheduler. Threadgehog's Export only mode gives you the finished posts to paste, and Threadgehog sends approved posts to Buffer, Typefully, Publer, Metricool and Postiz. That is a normal way to work: the model writes, the scheduler publishes.

ChatGPT does have scheduled tasks. These run a prompt on a recurring schedule or from supported app events, and you review runs in a Scheduled view. A scheduled task can produce a fresh batch of draft text each Monday, for example. It produces text for you to review before it goes out.

The platforms set their own limits, and they change. See the Threads character limit and the X character limit for the current numbers, and put them in your prompt so ChatGPT trims for you.

Projects and memory for a posting routine

Projects are the feature that fits a posting routine best. OpenAI describes a project as a place that keeps related chats, files, instructions and sources together, and says project instructions apply across its chats. Put your voice rules, your product description and your do-not-say list in the instructions, and every new chat in the project starts from them.

Memory carries useful context from earlier chats into later ones. You manage it in Settings > Personalization, where OpenAI says memory settings live. Treat memory as a convenience, and keep the rules you care about in project instructions where you can read and edit them.

ChatGPT has a lot beyond writing: working with files and browsing websites. For Threads and X, the useful ones are projects (shared voice), memory (shared context) and scheduled tasks (a regular batch).

How to prompt ChatGPT for Threads and X posts

Give it examples, not adjectives. "Casual and confident" produces generic copy. Five of your real posts produce something close to your voice.

A prompt that works: "Here are five posts of mine that did well. List what they have in common. Then write 8 posts about [feature], each as a Threads version and an X version, each inside its platform's character limit. Do not use hashtags. Do not start with a question." Run it once, edit, and save the useful rules.

Ask for one idea per post. A single post that tries to cover three features reads like an announcement. Ask for a thread only when the story has a beginning, a middle and an end, and tell ChatGPT how many posts the thread should have.

Using ChatGPT together with Threadgehog

Threadgehog is a Mac app that writes Threads and X posts from about ten example posts, keeps them in a review queue, and sends approved posts to Buffer, Typefully, Publer, Metricool or Postiz, or you choose Export only mode and paste them yourself. Threadgehog works alongside ChatGPT, and it can use it.

From version 1.1, Threadgehog can write with a ChatGPT Plus or Pro plan you already pay for, by running Codex on your Mac signed in to your account. No API key is needed, and drafts count toward your plan's usage limits. Setup is in the ChatGPT plan guide. You can also connect an OpenAI API key, covered in the OpenAI guide.

Threadgehog has a 14-day free trial when it opens (cancel before day 15 and you are not charged). Solo is $29 a month or $249 a year for 2 projects, Pro is $49 a month or $399 a year for 10 projects, and Unlimited is $79 a month, $649 a year, or $1,199 once for lifetime. The Mac app is on a waitlist now. See pricing.

Questions

How much does ChatGPT cost in October 2026?

OpenAI's docs list Free at $0, Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20 a month and Pro from $100 a month. Business is $20 per user per month billed annually or $25 billed monthly. Check OpenAI's pricing page for the current allowance on each plan.

Can ChatGPT post to Threads or X for me?

ChatGPT writes the draft and you paste it into Threads, X or a scheduler. Threadgehog sends approved posts to Buffer, Typefully, Publer, Metricool or Postiz, and its Export only mode gives you the finished posts to paste.

Which ChatGPT plan is enough for writing posts?

Any plan can draft posts. Plus at $20 a month is the usual choice for a daily routine because it has more room and lists ChatGPT credits for extra usage. The free plan works for trying a prompt.

How do I keep my voice consistent in ChatGPT?

Create a project and write your voice rules in its instructions, since OpenAI says project instructions apply across the project's chats. Add real posts as sources, and update the instructions each time you correct a draft.

Does ChatGPT remember my posting style?

Memory carries context between chats and is managed in Settings > Personalization. For a style you want to control, write it in project instructions so you can read and edit it.

Can I use my ChatGPT plan inside Threadgehog?

Yes, from Threadgehog 1.1. Threadgehog runs Codex on your Mac signed in to your Plus or Pro plan, with no API key. Drafts count toward your plan's limits. The Mac app is on a waitlist now.

Does ChatGPT know how my posts performed?

Paste your Threads or X numbers into a chat and ask which posts to repeat. Threadgehog learns from the drafts you approve and reject.
