“What are Threads Communities?”

What are Threads Communities?

Short answer

Threads Communities are topic spaces that Meta itself creates. Meta launched more than 100 of them in beta on October 2, 2025, covering topics such as basketball, TV, K-pop and books. Users cannot create their own. Members get a community-specific like emoji, the community shows on their profile, and you can post to a community without adding a topic tag.

What communities are

A community on Threads is a topic space, made by Meta, that gathers posts and people around one subject. TechCrunch reported the launch on October 2, 2025: more than 100 communities in beta, covering topics such as basketball, TV, K-pop and books, with Threads taking on a feature X has had for years.

The key design decision: communities are created by Meta, not by users. There is no create-a-community flow, so a business cannot spin one up for its brand. You join the ones that exist and fit.

What members get

Per the launch coverage, joining a community gives you a community-specific like emoji, so your likes on posts in that space carry its icon. The community you joined shows on your profile, which is how other members find you.

Posting works the way posting anywhere on Threads works, with one convenience: you can post to a community without adding a topic tag, because the community itself carries the topic.

Community versus topic tag

A topic tag is a label on a post: up to 50 characters, one topic per post, and any account can use any tag. The rules are in Threads topic tags.

A community is a space with members, not a label. The tag says what a post is about; the community is where people who care about that subject gather. You can use both, either, or, inside a community, skip the tag.

Using communities to find posts that work

Communities are a good hunting ground for example posts. Each one gathers posts about a single subject, so you can see in one place what that audience replies to, at your account size, without guessing at search terms.

That is the same habit this site teaches for building a voice: find 10 to 20 posts that did well in your niche and learn from their shape. The guide is how to find posts that work.

What is not published

Meta had no help page for communities that we could open, so exact join steps, moderation details and whether community posts get any treatment in For You are open questions. News logs list 2026 additions such as a Communities Hub and community champions; we could not confirm those with Meta, so they stay off this page.

Treat everything here as of the October 2025 launch plus what we could verify since. When Meta publishes its own page, that becomes the source of record.

Questions

Can I create a Threads community?

No. Meta creates communities itself; there is no user-created option at launch. You join the ones that exist.

How do I join a community on Threads?

Launch coverage describes joining a community you find on Threads. Meta had no help page with the steps when we checked, so look for the community on posts and profiles in your topic.

Do communities replace topic tags?

No. A tag labels a post; a community is a space with members. Inside a community you can post without a tag.

Are community posts shown in For You?

We found no Meta statement on how community posts are treated in the For You feed. Treat it as unknown.

What is a community like emoji?

Members of a community get a like emoji specific to that community, so likes inside the space carry its icon, per the launch coverage.

Can businesses join a Threads community?

Nothing in the launch coverage bars a business account from joining one. Creating a community is Meta's job, so pick the ones your buyers already gather in.

Who moderates a Threads community?

Meta creates and runs communities. No published moderation program details were available when we checked, so how rules are enforced is an open question.
