“Do links hurt reach on Threads?”
Do links hurt reach on Threads?
Short answer
Social Media Today reported in November 2024 that Instagram and Threads head Adam Mosseri said Threads does not punish posts with external links, and that lower reach on link posts comes from how people react to them. Meta has published no link rule since that we could find. The honest answer is to test it: set link share to 25% and compare views on your link posts against your link-free posts.
What was said, and when
In November 2024, Social Media Today published a rundown of where each big platform stands on external links. It reported that Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram and Threads, had said Threads does not punish posts that carry external links, and that when link posts reach fewer people, the cause is how people react to them, not a penalty.
That is a paraphrase. The article we read did not quote his words directly, and we could not find his original post, so we will not put quotation marks around anything here. It is also the most recent on-record word we found: no later Meta statement on links surfaced in our search.
One later blog post claimed Mosseri had reversed that position. We could not confirm it from any primary source, so it stays out of this page.
Why reach can still drop
Even with no penalty, link posts can travel less. Meta's own creator advice favors original content, and a post that reads like an ad earns fewer replies, and replies are close to half of views on Threads per Meta's analysis from the first half of 2024. A link at the end of every post also trains readers to scroll past.
None of that is a measured penalty. It is behavior, and behavior is exactly what you can test on your own account.
Link in the post or in the reply
A common creator pattern is to put the link in the first reply rather than the post, on the theory that the post itself travels further. That is advice from practitioner blogs, not from Meta; we found no Meta statement on either side.
Threadgehog takes a simpler route you can also run by hand: the link goes in the last post of a thread, and you set how many posts carry it at all.
How to test it on your account
Run a month with a fixed share. In Threadgehog, link share runs from 0% to 100% in steps of 5; at 25%, about 1 in 4 posts ends with your link, and the rest stay link-free. The setting and its trade-offs are in post frequency and promo ratio.
At the end of the month, compare views and replies on link posts versus link-free posts from the same hours. If the link posts hold their own, your audience tolerates links and the question is closed for you, whatever anyone's rule of thumb says.
The published rule: five links
The one hard, sourced rule is Meta's API limit: a post can carry 5 links or fewer, and from December 22, 2025, posts with more than five links fail during media creation. The details sit in Threads posting limits, next to the character and post limits.
Questions
Does Threads reduce reach for links?
Meta has published no link penalty. In November 2024 Mosseri was reported to say Threads does not punish external links, and that lower reach comes from how people react. Test it on your own account.
Should the link go in a reply?
It is a common creator pattern, but it comes from practitioner blogs, not Meta. We found no Meta statement either way.
How many links can a Threads post have?
Five or fewer through the API, and posts with more than five links fail from December 22, 2025.
Does a link preview card help?
We have no data on that. Meta's docs say the first link in a text-only post becomes the preview card.
Do links in my bio count?
Meta's published link rules cover posts, not bios. We found no statement tying bio links to reach.
How many of my posts should carry my link?
There is no sourced ratio. A minority of posts, such as the 1 in 4 that a 25% link share gives you, is a common starting point you can test.
Can I edit a post to add a link?
You can edit a post's text within 15 minutes of posting, per the Threads Help Center. The edit window is short, so decide about the link before you publish.
Will Threads mark my account as spam for links?
We found no Meta statement about accounts being flagged for ordinary link posting. The published rule is the five link maximum per post.
