“How long can X Premium posts be?”
How long can an X Premium post be?
Short answer
X's Premium help page says longer posts can be up to 25,000 characters, and one X page gives 4,000 for its iOS and Android steps. Everyone can read them, but only subscribers can write them. Every Premium tier includes longer posts, starting at $3 a month on web as of October 2026.
The limit, in X's own words
X's Premium page says: "Longer posts allow subscribers to post up to 25,000 characters." The types-of-posts page says longer posts "can have up to 25,000 characters." The Premium how-to page repeats 25,000, and so do X's desktop steps.
X's How to Post page gives "up to 4,000 characters" in its iOS and Android steps and 25,000 in its desktop steps. So plan on 25,000 on desktop, and check the counter in your compose box on mobile. The standard limit for everyone is 280, explained on the X character limit page.
If you plan work around the 25,000 number, test it first. Open the composer on the device you will use and type past 280. If the counter keeps going, your account can write longer posts there.
Who can write one
Longer posts are a feature of X Premium, and of the Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra plans on The X Subscription, X's newer bundle. The Premium page says Premium has three tiers, Basic, Premium and Premium+, and that longer posts, edit post and longer video uploads are available in every tier, Basic included.
As of October 2026 the page lists web pricing that starts at $3 a month or $32 a year for Basic, $8 a month or $84 a year for Premium, and $40 a month or $395 a year for Premium+, or local pricing. It also says X is not offering free trials of Premium.
X's Premium page now says Premium is part of The X Subscription, one plan for X, Grok and Cursor, and that every paid plan includes Premium benefits on the account you connect. It also says that if you already subscribe to Premium, your plan, price and features stay the same until you choose to switch.
For long posts, the practical point is that X's pages name both sets of plans: X Premium, and the Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra plans on The X Subscription. Check which one you are on in the app before you count on the feature.
How to write one
You write a longer post the same way as a regular post. Open the composer and type. When you reach 280 characters, the counter circle switches from showing progress around its edge to filling up. You can add up to 4 photos, a GIF or a video, polls and hashtags, and you can compose a longer post in a quote or a reply.
Because a longer post is created like any other, you do not need a special screen. Write in the composer on the web or the app, watch the counter, and post. On web, you cannot save the draft or schedule it, so write it in one sitting or keep the text in a notes app until you are ready.
Rules worth knowing
X lists these limitations on its types-of-posts page and Premium how-to page:
The Premium page lists edit post as a feature of every tier, with a 1 hour window to make a limited number of changes. For long posts that is the time to fix a typo, check that your mentions sit in the first 280 characters, and reorder media.
- Drafts and scheduling: you cannot currently save a draft or schedule a longer post on web. X's types-of-posts page lists both limits.
- Mentions: if you mention an account in the first 280 characters, they are notified. After 280 characters, they are not.
- Conversation controls: if only the accounts you mention can reply, they must be mentioned in the first 280 characters.
- Editing: after you send a longer post, you have 1 hour to edit it.
- Reading: everyone can read longer posts, and followers see them in their timeline.
Posting long posts through other tools
A scheduler publishes through X's API, and X's pages describe creating a longer post in the composer on x.com and in the apps. Write the long version there, and let your scheduler carry the standard posts. Threadgehog writes X posts for the 280 characters every account has, so what it sends to your scheduler fits a standard X post.
Also check the media side: X media limits covers video length for subscribers, where X's pages list several figures.
A related question is what readers see. The Premium page says everyone will be able to read longer posts, and the types-of-posts page says anyone who follows the sender sees a longer post in their timeline.
Long post or thread?
A long post keeps your idea in one place. A thread splits it into posts of 280 characters or fewer, each with its own replies. Choose by how the idea reads.
Use a long post when the piece is one argument that loses force if it is cut up: a postmortem, a pricing explanation, a story with a single arc. Use a thread when the idea has steps a reader can stop at, and when you want people to reply to one point at a time.
A long post has a practical constraint: the first 280 characters carry weight. Mentions after that point do not notify anyone, and if you restrict replies to mentioned accounts, they must be mentioned in the first 280. Put the people you are addressing near the top.
Whichever you pick, put the strongest line first. Readers in a timeline see the start of a post before they decide to read on, and X's own pages note the first 280 characters matter for mentions. That is a reason to treat those characters as your headline.
Where Threadgehog fits
Threadgehog writes X posts sized for the 280 characters every account has, and writes the X version of each Threads post you approve: under 280 characters when the idea fits, and a short thread only when it needs one. It sends approved posts to Buffer, Typefully, Publer, Metricool or Postiz on the schedule you pick.
If a Threads idea runs long, Threads' own text attachment holds up to 10,000 characters: see the Threads character limit. Join the waitlist on pricing.
