“How do you cross-post between Threads and X?”

How do you cross-post between Threads and X?

Short answer

Write once for Threads, then make an X version that fits 280 characters, and publish each through its own route: a scheduler that connects both networks sends each version through that network's API (checked October 2026). Threadgehog writes the X version of each approved Threads post for you.

Steps

  1. 1

    Write the Threads version

Use up to 500 characters. Put the claim in the first two lines.

  2. 2

    Cut for X

Keep the claim and the link. Drop the setup so it fits 280 with the link counted as 23.

  3. 3

    Check the media

Up to 4 photos, 1 GIF or 1 video on X. A carousel of more than 4 needs a trim.

  4. 4

    Send both to your scheduler

Use a tool that connects to both networks and pick a time for each.

  5. 5

    Reply on each network

Answer comments yourself in the first hour after each post.

What the platforms offer

Meta's Threads Help Center describes sharing into Threads from Instagram: an article called Share your Instagram posts to Threads, available on mobile. It also describes fediverse sharing, which sends your public Threads posts to other servers such as Mastodon, using the ActivityPub protocol.

X's help pages describe posting, scheduling on desktop, and a post source label that can show a third-party client name. They mention third-party tools used "to manage their posts" and point to a partners list.

Cross-posting runs through tools that publish to each network's API: one connection for Threads, one for X.

Meta's Threads API docs also list a Share to Instagram Stories page. That route goes to Instagram, not X.

How tools cross-post

Both networks let approved apps publish. Meta's Threads API publishes text, image, video and carousel posts for a user who grants the threads_content_publish permission. X's API creates posts with up to 4 photos, 1 GIF or 1 video attached. A scheduler holds your post and calls each API at the time you chose. For the Threads side, see Threads API for schedulers.

Two features are worth knowing. Posts made through the Threads API are shared to the fediverse if you turned that on. And posting the same text with the same media to both networks only works if the media fits both sets of limits.

A scheduler built for both asks you to connect each account separately. Connect the Threads profile and the X account, then pick the networks for each post. Buffer, Typefully, Publer, Metricool and Postiz each connect Threads and X accounts, and Threadgehog sends each approved version to the channel for its network.

What changes between the two

Copy-pasting a Threads post to X breaks in predictable places:

One more difference is what happens after posting. On Threads you can edit the text for 15 minutes. On X, edit post is a subscriber feature with a 1 hour window. If a typo is live on both networks, you may be able to fix it on one and not the other, so proof the text before it goes out.

  • Length: Threads allows 500 characters, X allows 280 (Threads, X).
  • Links: X counts every link as 23 characters. Threads allows up to 5 links through the API and shows a preview card for the first link in a text-only post.
  • Tags: Threads has one topic tag per post. X counts hashtags as ordinary characters.
  • Media: a Threads carousel takes up to 20 items through the API; an X post takes up to 4 photos, one GIF, or one video (Threads, X).
  • Polls: a Threads post with a poll is not shared to the fediverse. X and Threads each have their own poll rules.

A clean cross-posting workflow

Write the Threads version first. It has the room. Then cut for X: keep the claim, drop the setup, and keep the link. If the idea needs more than 280 characters, split it into a short thread rather than squeezing it.

Stagger the posts a little. Same text at the same minute on both networks reads like automation to anyone who follows you on both. A scheduler publishes for you, and the replies stay yours to write in each network's own voice.

Pick a rhythm and keep it. A common pattern is one idea a day, written for Threads in the morning and adapted for X to go out later, so the two networks do not carry identical text at the identical minute. In a scheduler, that is two queue slots per idea.

Check the media before you queue. A Threads carousel takes up to 20 items through the API, while an X post takes up to 4 photos, 1 GIF or 1 video. A six image Threads carousel becomes a four image X post, so choose the four strongest images first and keep the rest for a later Threads post.

A before and after

Say your Threads post is 470 characters and ends with a link. On X the link costs 23, which leaves 257 for words. Your Threads text is about 440 characters before the link, so you cut roughly 180, or about 40 percent.

Do the cut in a fixed order. First remove the setup sentence. Then shorten the example to its core number or detail. Last, trim adjectives. Keep the claim and the link. If the result still reads rushed, split it into two X posts instead of squeezing it. A short thread beats a cramped single post.

On the way back, do not pad. An X post pasted into Threads is allowed to be short.

Where Threadgehog fits

Threadgehog is built around this. It writes Threads posts and threads in a voice learned from about ten example posts. When you approve a Threads post it writes the X version on its own, sized for X, with the link kept, and in a thread the link goes in the last post. You review once.

Approved posts go to the scheduler you already use. Buffer, Typefully and Postiz post multi-post threads as threads. For Publer and Metricool, Threadgehog joins a short thread into one post. You can also choose Export only and paste both versions into Threads and X yourself. See one voice on Threads and X and pricing for the waitlist.

Questions

Can I post to Threads and X at the same time?

Yes, with a scheduler that connects both networks. Each version publishes through its own network's API at the time you pick.

What does Threads let me share to?

Threads documents sharing from Instagram into Threads and sharing to the fediverse. To reach X, publish an X version through a scheduler.

Should the text be identical on both?

Only if it fits 280 characters. Otherwise write a shorter X version and keep the link.

Do links work the same?

No. X counts any link as 23 characters. Threads allows up to 5 links through the API and previews the first in a text-only post.

Does Threadgehog write the X version?

Yes. When you approve a Threads post, it writes the X version on its own.

Which schedulers does Threadgehog send to?

Buffer, Typefully, Publer, Metricool and Postiz, on the schedule you pick, while the app is open.

Can I turn a long Threads post into an X thread?

Yes. Cut it at natural breaks, keep each post under 280 characters, and put the link in the last post.

How should I time posts on both networks?

Stagger them by a few hours and reply on each network in its own voice. A steady pattern is Threads in the morning and X later the same day.
